International Geomining Park - Mine of Raibl / Mine Lab

Arte, cultura e storia Tarvisiano

The mine of Raibl – Cave del Predil was for centuries one of Europe’s most important lead and zinc mines. Closed in 1990, it is now the International Geomining Park of Raibl, a monument to the memory of miners and a tourist and educational destination.
The old mine consisted of a network of tunnels 120 km long laid out over 19 levels burrowing down as deep as 520 m. Some of the galleries can now be visited on foot or riding an electric train. You will discover minerals and extraction techniques, but most of all, you will understand how hard thousands of miners laboured inside the bowels of the earth for centuries.
The visit ends with the Mine Lab, a museum to mining tradition exhibiting photos of the time and historical papers.
The town of Raibl-Cave del Predil is also worth a visit, owing its Italian name to the mine and providing a modern example of a company town.
