Predil lake

Cave del Predil is a hamlet of the Municipality of Tarvisio easily reached by taking State Road 54 and going through Tarvisio at Predil Pass (1156 m) by the Slovenian border; Lake Predil is the region’s second by size after Lake Cavazzo. Cave del Predil goes all the way back to the year 1000, when mining work started there, which ended a few years ago.
The intensely blue-green waters are clear and cold; a partially destroyed and submerged morainic ridge forms an islet that makes the landscape all the more enchanting.
In the summer, the lake is sought after for getting relief from the heat and relaxing by its shores or at the two resorts. A nautical-bathing resort was built by the lake that features a beach area, nautical equipment (rowboats, sailboats, paddle boats, surf bikes, kayaks), games for children and a windsurfing school.

According to legend, there was once a small village where the lake is now. The people who lived there were an insensitive bunch, and, on a cold winter night, they refused to welcome a woman with her child who had come from far away. Except for a poor family, who took them in and showered them with attentions. The morning after, the lake had covered the whole village, except for an islet where the house of the poor family stood; the woman and child had both vanished.
