The "Pongau Nord" project region is located south of the city of Salzburg in the "Salzburger Innergebirg" mountains beyond the "Pass Lueg" between the Tennengebirge and Hochkönig mountains. It belongs to the St. Johann im Pongau district of the province of Salzburg and currently comprises 6 of a total of 25 municipalities in this district: Werfen, Pfarrwerfen and Bischofshofen in the Salzach Valley and Werfenweng at approx. 1,000 m above sea level above the Salzach Valley; Hüttau in the Fritztal Valley; St. Martin am Tennengebirge at approx. 1,000 m above sea level in the Lammertal Valley.
Werfen, Pfarrwerfen and Hüttau are located almost directly on the Tauern motorway A10. In addition, Werfen, Pfarrwerfen and Bischofshofen, each with their own railway station, are located on the "Salzburg-Tiroler-Bahn" line, including S-Bahn traffic.
The settlement of the region dates back to the Copper and Bronze Ages, not least because of its wealth of raw materials such as copper ores, the mining of which was an important economic factor in the Salzburger Land.
Today all Pongau communities are united in a regional association, the "Regionalverband Pongau", for the purpose of their economic, cultural and structural strengthening and promotion.
