The Slizza Creek gorge has been known for centuries, since the time when local nobles had a path traced along the creek to cross the deep gorge, for the location was thought to be enchanting and fascinating. In time, due to historical vicissitudes, the path was abandoned to neglect. It was completely re-adapted and opened to the public only in 1999.
The Slizza circuit starts behind the new Tarvisio Boscoverde train station and proceeds on Via Bamberga, lined by very beautiful little villas and abandoned old houses, eventually reaching the old and out of service Tarvisio-Ljubljana railway overpass. An information sign explains the Orrido dello Slizza circuit, which ends here. You can then continue by turning left past the sign and going up a hillock with a beautiful pine forest; at the highest point, you will find the great monument to the Austrian Soldier of 1809, in memory of the wars fought in these areas during Napoleon’s time.
The path winds over wooden steps and jetties that allow you to walk suspended over the tumultuous water encased between the rocks.
