Dog Sledding is a winter sport where a musher drives a dog sled. Its origins hark back to Arctic peoples, Eskimos and Athabaska Indians, whose only means of transport were sleds pulled by dogs.
In some areas where technological progress has yet to reach, Inuit populations make use of sled dogs in the same way and for the same purposes as when the practice was invented, whereas in most countries it has become a sport. Italy’s F.I.M.S.S., Italian Musher and Dog Sledding Federation, is part of Ararad and Monica’s International Mushing School based in Fusine, Valromana.
In addition to teaching dog sledding and raising Alaskan Huskies for many years, Ararad and Monica have been participating in the most important races. In 1996, Ararad ran in the legendary Iditarod dog sled race, 1900 km from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska. He also ran the Alpirod, 900 km on French and Austrian Alps, in ‘89, ‘90 and ‘91.
Together with his brother Armen, he has been promoting this sport in Italy since 1984.
